How to Play Triple Canfield Solitaire

3 min read
The opening deal of Triple Canfield Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

Build all 156 cards onto 12 foundation piles that all start from the same randomly chosen base rank each deal. A large 26-card reserve and unlimited stock redeals give you plenty of chances to work through the deck.

Setup

  1. The stock is dealt 3 cards at a time to the waste pile
  2. One card is dealt face-up to the first foundation to show the base rank for all 12 foundation piles
  3. A reserve of 26 cards is placed face-down with only the top card face-up
  4. Seven tableau piles receive 1 card each, all face-up

How to play

  • Look at the top card of the waste pile and the reserve—these can move to the tableau or foundations
  • On the tableau, place cards one rank lower in the opposite color (a red 6 on a black 7)
  • Move complete runs together if each card in the sequence is properly ordered
  • When you create an empty tableau pile, it's automatically filled with the top card from the reserve
  • Play cards to the foundations by rank and suit, building up from the base rank and wrapping around from King to Ace; cards move to the foundations automatically once no other card could be built on them
  • Click the stock to deal 3 more cards when you need them; when empty, click again to redeal the waste

How to win

Objective: Move every card to the foundations, building up by rank and suit from the base card dealt to the first foundation.

You win when all 156 cards are built into the foundations. You're stuck when no cards can move anywhere on the board, even after redealing the stock.

Tips

  • Play the top reserve card whenever you can—it's the only way to reach the cards buried beneath it
  • Since an emptied tableau pile refills automatically from the reserve, think ahead about which reserve card you want exposed next
  • Look ahead before dealing new cards from the stock; sometimes waiting opens up better moves
