How to Play Milligan Harp Solitaire

3 min read
The opening deal of Milligan Harp Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

Build eight foundations using two decks while managing eight tableau piles dealt in a pyramid pattern (1 card to the first pile, 2 to the second, and so on). Move cards in alternating color sequences.

Setup

  1. Place eight empty foundation piles to the side (two for each suit, since you're playing with two decks)
  2. Deal cards in a pyramid pattern: 1 card to the first pile, 2 to the second, 3 to the third, and so on
  3. In each pile, only the top card starts face up; the rest are face down until exposed
  4. Keep the stock separate; click it to deal one card to each pile when needed

How to play

  • Move cards from the tableau to build foundations up by suit (Ace through King).
  • On the tableau, build sequences downward in alternating colors (such as placing a 10 of spades on a Jack of hearts).
  • You can move groups of cards together if they form a valid sequence in alternating colors.
  • When you move a card, flip over the face-down card beneath it.
  • Empty tableau piles can be filled with any available card or sequence.
  • Stuck cards automatically move to the foundations when they can't be played elsewhere. You can adjust this behavior in Settings if preferred.
  • When you need more cards, click the stock to deal one card to each tableau pile; you only get one pass through the stock.

How to win

Objective: Move all cards to the eight foundations, building from Ace to King in each suit.

You win when all cards are built to the eight foundation piles.

Tips

  • Expose face-down cards early by building sequences and moving cards to create empty piles.
  • The pyramid deal means some piles have many buried cards—focus on developing accessible sequences.
  • Build longer tableau sequences to free up resources and access the cards you need for the foundations.
