How to Play Fourteen Out Solitaire

2 min read
The opening deal of Fourteen Out Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

Remove cards in pairs that add up to 14, working with a fixed layout of 12 tableau piles where only top cards are available. The goal: Clear every card from the table by removing pairs that total 14.

Setup

  1. All 52 cards are dealt face-up into 12 tableau piles across the table
  2. Only the top card of each pile is available to play
  3. Removed cards go to a discard pile (not displayed)

How to play

  • Identify pairs of cards whose values add up to 14: Ace (1) + King (13), 2 + Queen (12), 3 + Jack (11), 4 + 10, 5 + 9, 6 + 8, or 7 + 7
  • Click and drag one available card onto its matching partner to remove both from the table
  • Continue pairing cards until you either win by clearing the table or get stuck with no valid pairs remaining
  • Plan ahead to avoid blocking high-value cards underneath lower ones

How to win

Objective: Clear every card from the table by removing pairs that total 14.

You win when all 52 cards have been removed as pairs. The game is lost when no valid pairs remain on the visible card tops.

Tips

  • Each rank pairs with only one other rank (7s pair with each other), so track which partner ranks are getting buried or running low
  • Avoid making moves that trap mid-range cards (4-9) under cards you'll need later
  • Since there's no redeal or stock to draw from, each move is permanent—take time to plan ahead
