FreeCell

How to Play Double FreeCell Solitaire

3 min read
The opening deal of Double FreeCell Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

This bigger take on FreeCell shares two decks across just four foundations, ten tableau columns, and six free cells. Every foundation has to take both copies of its suit, so you'll be pairing up ranks as you climb from Ace to King.

Setup

  1. Four foundation piles already hold one Ace each, one per suit
  2. Ten tableau columns each start with 10 face-up cards, including the second Ace of every suit
  3. Six free cells start empty and each hold one card at a time

How to play

  • Each foundation pile takes both copies of its suit: place both Aces before moving on to the 2s, both 2s before the 3s, and so on up to both Kings
  • Cards move to the foundations automatically once they can't be built anywhere else; you can change this behavior in Settings
  • In the tableau, place a card on one card higher in the opposite color, such as a black 6 on a red 7
  • You can only move the top card of a tableau column directly; use free cells to shuffle several cards one at a time
  • Free cells hold one card each and can send that card to the foundation or a tableau column
  • Empty tableau columns can hold any card, and clearing one gives you more room to maneuver
  • The top card of a foundation pile can be moved back into play if you need it

How to win

Objective: Move all 104 cards to the four foundations

You win when all cards reach the foundations.

Tips

  • Use free cells sparingly—save them for situations where you really need to access buried cards
  • Empty tableau columns are valuable; try not to fill them unless you have a clear plan
  • Track both copies of each rank, since a foundation needs the matching pair before it can move higher
