How to Play Ukrainian Solitaire

2 min read
The opening deal of Ukrainian Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

Ukrainian only lets you send a full run of 13 cards, Ace to King in one suit, to the foundations at once, so you'll need to build the whole sequence in the tableau before it counts. The goal: Move all cards to the foundations

Setup

  1. Use a single 52-card deck
  2. Deal 7 tableau piles with a special pattern: increasing numbers of face-down cards, topped with face-up cards (all 52 cards are dealt out)
  3. Set up 4 foundation piles (one per suit)

How to play

  • The foundations accept only complete runs of all 13 ranks in the same suit, moved together as a single group
  • On the tableau, place a card one rank lower in the same suit on another card
  • Move any group of face-up cards together, even if not in order—only the bottom card must fit its destination
  • Only a King can start a new tableau pile
  • Cards wrap around: a King can be placed on an Ace for tableau building
  • When a complete run from King down to Ace in one suit is built on the tableau, it moves to the foundation automatically

How to win

Objective: Move all cards to the foundations

You win by getting all four complete 13-card sequences into the foundations. The strict all-or-nothing requirement makes this a tough game to finish.

Tips

  • Building complete sequences in the tableau before removing them is key
  • Work to expose face-down cards—they often hold the cards you need
  • The wrap-around rule (King onto Ace) can help you build longer sequences
