Forty Thieves

How to Play Thieves Rush Solitaire

3 min read
The opening deal of Thieves Rush Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

A two-deck variant of Forty Thieves with three trips through the stock. The waste turns back into a new stock after each trip, but you draw one card fewer at a time than before, so your options tighten as the game goes on.

Setup

  1. Shuffle two decks and deal four cards to each of 10 tableau piles
  2. Place remaining cards in the stock, to be dealt in three passes
  3. Eight foundation piles are ready for Aces

How to play

  • Build tableau piles down by rank (one lower) in the same suit
  • Move only the top card of each pile to another pile or to foundations
  • Click the stock to deal three cards at a time to the waste pile on the first pass
  • On the second pass, deal two cards at a time to the waste
  • On the third and final pass, deal one card at a time
  • Play the top waste card to the tableau or directly to foundations when possible
  • Qualifying cards move automatically to the foundations once they can't build on the tableau; you can change this behavior in Settings
  • Empty tableau piles can be filled with any card, not just a King

How to win

Objective: Move all 104 cards to eight foundation piles, built by suit from Ace to King.

All 104 cards are on the eight foundation piles within three passes. You fail if cards remain after the final pass.

Tips

  • Plan ahead before the second and third passes—you'll have fewer cards to work with
  • Send playable cards to the foundations early to open up tableau space before your draws shrink
  • Save tableau spaces for strategic moves; they become more valuable as stock options shrink
