How to Play Block Solitaire

2 min read
The opening deal of Block Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

A challenging two-deck game where you build foundations by suit and must strategically work with just the cards on the table, with no second chances. The goal: Move all 104 cards to the eight foundations to win.

Setup

  1. Deal 2 cards face up to each of 12 tableau piles
  2. The remaining 80 cards form the stock but cannot be drawn during play
  3. Eight foundation piles start empty, one for each suit (two decks)

How to play

  • Build each foundation up by suit from Ace to King
  • On the tableau, build downward by suit (10♣ goes on J♣, etc.)
  • Only the top card of each tableau pile can be moved
  • When you empty a tableau pile, it is immediately refilled with the top card from the stock
  • Eligible cards move to the foundations on their own once no other card could be played on them; you can change this behavior in Settings if you prefer

How to win

Objective: Move all 104 cards to the eight foundations to win.

You win when all 104 cards reach the foundations. The game often blocks because the stock cannot be used, making wins rare.

Tips

  • Wins are rare since you can never draw from the stock—everything must come from what's already on the tableau
  • Expose cards thoughtfully; once you're blocked, the game is over
  • Focus on building complete foundation sequences rather than deep tableau runs
