Forty Thieves
How to Play Quadrangle Solitaire

A challenging two-deck game from the Forty Thieves family. The foundation base rank is determined randomly each deal, requiring adaptability and careful planning.
Setup
- One card is dealt to the first foundation pile to reveal a randomly chosen base rank; all eight foundation piles must be built up starting from that same rank
- The tableau has 12 columns with 3 cards each, all face-up
- Remaining 67 cards form the stock
- One waste pile receives cards drawn from the stock
How to play
- The randomly chosen base rank determines every foundation's starting point (e.g., if 7 is chosen, every foundation pile must begin with a 7 as it's built up, even though only one 7 is dealt out at the start)
- Build on foundations upward by one rank in the same suit, wrapping around (King continues to Ace)
- On the tableau, build downward by one rank in the same suit; only top cards move
- Move one card at a time from the tableau to foundations or between tableau columns
- Click the stock to deal one card to the waste (one pass only, no redeal)
- When a tableau pile empties, it's automatically refilled with the top card from the waste pile, or the stock if the waste is empty
- Cards that can't be built anywhere else move to the foundations automatically (you can change this in Settings)
How to win
Objective: Move all 104 cards from the two decks to eight foundation piles by building upward in matching suits from a randomly chosen starting rank.
You win when all 104 cards are moved to the eight foundation piles. You're stuck when the stock is exhausted and no legal moves remain.
Tips
- Adapt your strategy to the random base rank—each game starts differently
- Create empty tableau piles strategically to maneuver cards and maximize foundation moves
- Plan ahead since you only have one pass through the stock
