Forty Thieves

How to Play Lucas Solitaire

3 min read
The opening deal of Lucas Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

A one-deck Forty Thieves cousin spread across thirteen tableau piles. Starting with all four Aces already on the foundations takes some of the luck out of the deal.

Setup

  1. The four Aces are removed and placed on the foundations at the start
  2. Thirteen tableau piles are arranged in a row; each receives three of the remaining cards, all face-up
  3. The remaining cards form the stock; click it to deal one card at a time to the waste pile
  4. No redeal is allowed—you get a single pass through the deck only

How to play

  • Build the foundations up in suit, from Ace to King
  • In the tableau, build cards one rank lower in the same suit (a 9♠ under a 10♠, etc.)
  • Only the top card of a tableau pile can move
  • Empty tableau piles accept any card
  • Cards automatically move to the foundations whenever no other card can be built on them; you can change this in Settings if preferred
  • Draw from the stock when tableau moves are exhausted; there's no redeal, so once the stock is empty no new cards become available

How to win

Objective: Move every card to the four foundations in suit from Ace to King

You win when all 52 cards reach the foundations. With no redeal, you're stuck if you run out of moves once the stock is empty.

Tips

  • Since Aces are already placed, focus on building sequences of the same suit downward
  • Create empty piles strategically—they're your only flexibility for moving cards
  • Expose deeply buried cards early before drawing from the stock, since there's no redeal
