How to Play Up and Up Solitaire

3 min read
The opening deal of Up and Up Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

A relaxed solitaire variant where you try to use up the entire stock by building ascending sequences in the tableau. Without foundations to fill, all your focus is on moving cards from the stock.

Setup

  1. Deal one card face up to each of the 10 tableau piles.
  2. Place the remaining 42 cards in the stock pile, top card face up (you'll play through it once, with no redeal).
  3. The tableau is your only playing area—there are no foundations in this game.

How to play

  • The stock's top card is already face up and ready to play; you get one pass through the entire stock with no redeal.
  • Move the top card of the stock onto any tableau pile if it's one rank higher than the pile's top card, any suit.
  • If a tableau pile becomes empty, it is automatically refilled with the top card from the stock.
  • Ranks wrap around: you can build a King on an Ace (King is one rank 'higher' than Ace in this game).
  • Focus on clearing the stock by finding homes for each drawn card before the pile runs out.
  • The game ends when the stock is empty; you lose if the top stock card ever has nowhere to go.

How to win

Objective: Play all 52 cards from the stock onto ten tableau piles before the stock runs out.

You win by playing all 52 cards onto the tableau before the stock empties. You're stuck if the stock runs out with an unplayable card left.

Tips

  • Since an emptied tableau pile refills immediately from the stock, think ahead about which pile you're about to clear instead of trying to keep it open.
  • Watch the ranks as you draw; planning ahead for the next few cards helps you position piles strategically.
  • Use the wrap-around rule (King on Ace) as an escape route when a tableau pile seems blocked.
