How to Play Rouge Forty Solitaire

3 min read
The opening deal of Rouge Forty Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

Ten tableau piles are dealt four cards deep with only the top card showing, and you dig through them to feed four color-based foundations and four complete-run foundations. One pass through the stock adds a new card to every pile at once.

Setup

  1. Deal 4 cards to each of 10 tableau piles; only the top card of each pile starts face up, the other 3 stay face down
  2. Four color-based foundation piles begin empty; the first card played to each must be an Ace, and within each pair of piles one needs a red Ace and the other a black Ace, then build upward by rank in the same color
  3. Four complete-run foundations: accept only entire sequences of all 13 ranks moved together as a single unit
  4. Keep remaining cards face-down as the stock; a single pass only with no redeal

How to play

  • Build the four color-based foundations upward by rank, keeping each pile a single color, starting from an Ace
  • Build complete-run foundations only by moving complete 13-card sequences together
  • Build tableau piles downward by rank in opposite colors (red on black, black on red)
  • Move a face-up card, or a whole run of face-up cards in proper opposite-color order, to another tableau pile
  • Only Kings can start new empty tableau piles
  • Click the stock to deal one card face-up onto each tableau pile

How to win

Objective: Move all 104 cards to the foundation piles

You win when all cards reach the eight foundation piles. You're stuck when the stock empties and no more moves are possible.

Tips

  • Only the top card of each tableau pile starts visible, so uncover the cards beneath it before you plan too far ahead
  • Create long alternating-color runs to free up low-ranked cards for the foundations
  • Save Kings for filling empty tableau piles when necessary
