How to Play Manx Solitaire

3 min read
The opening deal of Manx Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

Build complete 13-card runs in descending rank order across four tableau piles, using a single spare cell to help maneuver cards. Deal from the stock when you run out of moves, but you only get one pass through it.

Setup

  1. Set up four foundation piles, four tableau piles, and one open cell
  2. Deal one card face up to each of the four tableau piles
  3. Keep the rest of the deck as your stock; click it to deal one card to each tableau pile when you run out of moves

How to play

  • Build sequences on the tableau by moving cards. Cards must be one rank lower than the card below, regardless of suit.
  • The rank order wraps around: you can place a King on an Ace.
  • You can move a run of cards together as long as each card is one rank lower than the one below it.
  • An empty tableau pile accepts any available card.
  • Place a single card into the open cell to hold it temporarily; only one card can sit there at a time.
  • Once a tableau pile holds a complete run of all 13 ranks, it automatically moves to an empty foundation pile as a group; you can adjust this behavior in Settings if preferred.
  • When you have no more moves, click the stock to deal one card to each tableau pile; you only get one pass through the stock.

How to win

Objective: Move all cards to the foundations as complete runs of all thirteen ranks, moved together as a group.

You win when all four 13-card runs are moved to the foundations.

Tips

  • Empty tableau piles are precious—the more you can create and keep, the better. Plan carefully before filling them.
  • Build longer sequences rather than spreading cards across many piles; this frees up space for repositioning.
  • Use the cell carefully—only one card fits there, so don't fill it unless you have a plan to retrieve the card later.
