How to Play Lily Solitaire

3 min read
The opening deal of Lily Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

Lily challenges you to sort two decks into 13 tableau piles, each building down into one complete King-to-Ace run of alternating colors. Only Kings can fill empty piles, and finished runs can move to the foundations.

Setup

  1. Deal 4 cards to each of the 13 tableau piles: the 1st and 3rd cards dealt to a pile are face-down, the 2nd and 4th are face-up
  2. Eight foundation piles start empty and only accept a fully completed 13-card run
  3. The stock holds the remaining cards; you can deal through it once, with no redeal

How to play

  • On the tableau, build piles downward by rank (King down to Ace) with alternating colors (red on black, black on red)
  • Move a run together when every card in it is one rank lower and opposite color than the card it covers
  • Only a King can fill an empty tableau pile
  • When a tableau pile holds a complete, unbroken 13-card run from King to Ace, move the whole run to a foundation
  • Click the stock to deal one card onto every tableau pile; you get a single pass through the stock with no redeal

How to win

Objective: Arrange each tableau pile into one complete run of all 13 ranks in descending order with alternating colors; completed runs may then move to the foundations

You win when every tableau pile holds a complete run of all 13 ranks from King to Ace in alternating colors; moving finished runs to the foundations is optional, not required to win. You're stuck when no more moves are available before exhausting the stock.

Tips

  • Expose face-down cards by building on tableau piles whenever possible
  • Empty tableau columns strategically by moving Kings; only Kings can refill them
  • Work toward building complete sequences before moving them to foundations
