How to Play Frog Solitaire

3 min read
The opening deal of Frog Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

A two-deck game with 104 cards where 13 cards sit in a playable reserve pile, cards play to any spot in five tableau piles, and foundations build by rank regardless of suit. The goal: Move all 104 cards to eight foundation piles, building each pile up by rank from Ace to King regardless of suit.

Setup

  1. A reserve pile holds 13 cards face-up; only the top card can be played
  2. Five empty tableau piles wait to receive cards—any card can start or continue a pile
  3. A stock pile holds the remaining 91 cards; its top card is already face up and playable directly
  4. Eight foundation piles wait to build up by rank from Ace to King (any suit can go in any pile)

How to play

  • Cards automatically move to the foundations by rank once they can no longer be used elsewhere; you can customize this behavior in Settings
  • In the tableau, play any card to any pile regardless of rank or suit—there are no tableau building rules
  • Move the top card from the reserve pile to the tableau or to a foundation
  • Play the stock's exposed top card directly to the tableau or foundations; you only get one pass through the stock, with no redeal
  • As reserve and stock cards are played, buried cards become available to use

How to win

Objective: Move all 104 cards to eight foundation piles, building each pile up by rank from Ace to King regardless of suit.

The game is won when all 104 cards reach the eight foundation piles. You're stuck when no more plays are possible from the stock, reserve, or tableau.

Tips

  • The tableau is flexible—use it as a holding area to access cards buried in the reserve
  • Try to keep the reserve pile active by playing from it regularly, so buried cards become accessible
  • Plan your foundation plays carefully; remember that ranks matter, not suits, so you have more flexibility than in standard solitaire
