How to Play Exiled Kings Solitaire

3 min read
The opening deal of Exiled Kings Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

A streamlined solitaire where you deal cards to foundations and tableau, building down by rank in the tableau while filling empty spaces only with Kings. The goal: Move all 52 cards to the four foundations by building up in suit from Ace to King.

Setup

  1. Four foundation piles start with Aces (one per suit), receiving four cards dealt at the start
  2. Eight tableau piles, each dealt six cards face up
  3. Cards available for play come from the top of each tableau pile

How to play

  • Build foundations up in the same suit, one rank at a time (Ace through King)
  • In the tableau, build down by one rank in any suit—any card may go on top of another card of one rank higher
  • Move only the top card of a tableau pile
  • When a tableau pile becomes empty, only a King can fill the space
  • Cards automatically move to the foundations once they can no longer be built elsewhere in the tableau (you can change this in Settings to always move or never move automatically)
  • During the initial deal, any card that belongs on a foundation goes there automatically instead of to the tableau
  • No stock or waste pile in this game—work only with the cards you see

How to win

Objective: Move all 52 cards to the four foundations by building up in suit from Ace to King.

You win when all four foundation piles are complete (Ace through King in each suit). You lose if you run out of playable moves and cards remain on the tableau.

Tips

  • Empty tableau spaces are valuable but can only hold Kings—use them strategically
  • Focus on exposing buried cards in the tableau by building sequences
  • Plan ahead to avoid blocking Kings in the middle of tableau piles

  • Luckier Thirteen — An open-tableau game where you build down in alternating colors across thirteen piles, with the friendly twist that any card can fill an empty pile.
  • Martha — Build four foundations from aces while managing twelve tableau columns that start with a mix of face-up and face-down cards.
  • Morehead — This single-deck game plays like Somerset but with a twist: you build on the tableau into a different suit rather than a matching color, moving only one card at a time as you work toward the foundations.
  • Stewart — A Martha variant where you can only move single cards, not sequences.
