How to Play Tuxedo Solitaire

3 min read
The opening deal of Tuxedo Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

Tuxedo deals every card face up across seven tableau piles right from the start, and gives you seven free cells to help shuffle cards around while you build foundations by suit. The goal: Move all cards to the foundations in ascending order by suit

Setup

  1. Use a single 52-card deck
  2. Deal cards to 7 tableau piles: 8 cards to piles 1, 4, and 7; 7 cards to piles 2, 3, 5, and 6
  3. All cards on the tableau are face-up from the start
  4. Set up 4 foundation piles (one per suit)
  5. Create 7 temporary storage cells, each holding one card

How to play

  • Build foundations from Ace up to King in the same suit
  • On the tableau, place a card one rank lower in the same suit on another card
  • Move a sequence of cards together if each card is one rank lower and the same suit as the one below it
  • Only a King can start a new tableau pile
  • Use the cells to temporarily store cards—each cell holds one card
  • Move any card from the tableau or cells to a foundation or another tableau pile as allowed
  • When a card cannot be built on anything, it moves to the foundation automatically

How to win

Objective: Move all cards to the foundations in ascending order by suit

You win when all cards are in the foundations. You're stuck when no legal moves remain.

Tips

  • Use cells strategically to free up chains of cards on the tableau
  • Save cells for blocking high cards that would otherwise impede your building
  • Build foundations actively—the more cards in the foundations, the more tableau space opens up

  • Baker's — A strategic solitaire in the FreeCell family, with four temporary storage cells and eight tableau piles where you build sequences in descending order by suit only—no alternating colors.
  • Chinese FreeCell — A streamlined version of FreeCell using only Hearts, Spades, and Diamonds.
  • Double Sea Towers — A two-deck FreeCell variant where nine temporary cells hold single cards, helping you maneuver through 11 tableau piles.
  • Eight Off — This FreeCell relative gives you eight reserve cells to work with, but tableau sequences must stay within the same suit as you dig out buried cards.
