How to Play Perseverance A Solitaire

2 min read
The opening deal of Perseverance A Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

Perseverance A is a tableau-heavy game where the four aces start on the foundations. Unlike its stricter parent Cruel, you can move sequences together to rearrange buried cards.

Setup

  1. Deal 4 cards to the 4 foundation piles as a head start—each an Ace
  2. Deal the remaining 48 cards into 12 tableau piles, 4 cards each
  3. All cards are face-up

How to play

  • Build the foundations up by suit from Ace through King
  • In the tableau, build down in the same suit (7♠ on 8♠, J♥ on Q♥, etc.)
  • Move a sequence together if it builds correctly (for example, 6-5-4-3♠ onto 7♠)
  • Empty tableau spaces cannot be filled—avoid creating them unless necessary
  • Foundations receive cards automatically when no other play is available (this can be changed in Settings)
  • There's no stock or waste—all 52 cards are on the board from the start

How to win

Objective: Move all 52 cards to the four foundations in suit from Ace through King.

You win when all cards reach the foundations. You're stuck when no legal moves remain.

Tips

  • Empty spaces are gone forever, so be deliberate about depleting piles
  • Moving sequences is your key tool—use it to dig out the low cards the foundations need next
  • Send cards to the foundations as soon as you can to keep tableau piles short and manageable

  • Ripple Fan — A one-deck game related to Cruel, spreading the deck across thirteen tableau piles instead of twelve so you have a little more room to build same-suit runs down to the foundations.
  • Royal Family — A forgiving single-deck game where all 52 cards are dealt out up front: foundations descend from Kings while tableau piles let you build both up and down in the same suit.
  • Unusual — A two-deck solitaire challenge where you race to build eight foundation piles while managing 24 tableau columns.
  • Demon Fan — Demon Fan deals the whole deck across 18 tableau piles, with just the top card of each pile face up.
