How to Play Whitehorse Solitaire

3 min read
The opening deal of Whitehorse Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

A streamlined Klondike variation with a smaller tableau that makes the game more accessible. The stock draws three cards at a time and can be recycled infinitely, giving you many chances to find winning moves.

Setup

  1. Seven tableau piles are dealt one card each, face up
  2. Four foundation piles start empty—an Ace placed there begins each one
  3. A stock pile holds the remaining cards; click it to draw three cards at a time

How to play

  • Click the stock to draw three cards into the waste pile (the top card plays)
  • Build the foundations from Ace up to King in the same suit
  • In the tableau, place a card one rank lower and opposite color on any card (a red 6 on a black 7)
  • Move sequences together if each card follows the same pattern (one rank lower, opposite color)
  • Empty tableau piles are automatically refilled with the top waste card, or the top stock card if the waste is empty
  • Cards that can no longer be built on in the tableau automatically move to the foundations—you can change this in the settings if you prefer
  • When the stock runs out, click it again to turn the waste pile back over as a new stock—no shuffling, so the same draw order repeats

How to win

Objective: Move every card to the four foundation piles, building each from Ace to King in the same suit.

You win when all cards are in the foundations. You're stuck when no more moves remain despite having recycled the stock multiple times.

Tips

  • An emptied tableau pile refills itself right away from the waste (or the stock if the waste is empty), so you can't bank empty spaces—focus on clearing whole piles to keep fresh cards flowing
  • The unlimited redeals mean patience often pays off—keep trying different combinations
  • With only one starting card per tableau pile, focus on building long runs to make room for more cards
