Baker's Dozen

How to Play Spanish Solitaire

2 min read
The opening deal of Spanish Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

This Baker's Dozen relative deals 13 tableau columns instead of the usual one row, and lets you refill gaps in the main columns while the side columns stay closed once emptied. The goal: Move all 52 cards to the four foundations in ascending suit order.

Setup

  1. One standard deck (52 cards) shuffled
  2. 13 tableau columns total: 7 columns get 4 cards each (all face up), 6 additional columns get 4 cards each (all face up)
  3. After the deal, all Kings are automatically moved to the bottom of their piles
  4. 4 foundation piles wait empty, ready to build from Ace to King

How to play

  • On the 7 main tableau columns, place a card one rank lower than the card below it, any suit
  • On the 6 additional tableau columns, place cards only in the same rank order as the main columns
  • Only the top card of each pile is playable
  • Empty spaces in the 7 main columns can be filled with any card, but empty spaces in the 6 additional columns cannot be filled
  • Matching cards move to the foundations automatically once they're no longer needed for tableau building (you can change this in Settings to always automatic or always manual)

How to win

Objective: Move all 52 cards to the four foundations in ascending suit order.

You win when all four foundation piles hold complete King-high sequences. The game is stuck if no legal moves remain and cards are still left in the tableau.

Tips

  • Plan ahead: space is limited in the main columns, so use empty spaces wisely
  • Avoid blocking high-value cards in the additional columns where empty spaces can't be refilled
  • Work toward exposing lower ranks early to build foundation sequences
