How to Play Buffalo Bill Solitaire

3 min read
The opening deal of Buffalo Bill Solitaire, laid out on a green felt table.

An easier variation with two foundation stacks: one building from Ace to King, the other from King to Ace, plus 26 small tableau fans and 8 reserve cells. The goal: Move all 104 cards to the foundations: build Aces up to Kings in one set, and Kings down to Aces in the other, each by suit.

Setup

  1. Deal 4 cards to each of 26 tableau fans (piles), all face up.
  2. Set up 4 Ace foundations and 4 King foundations; each of the four Ace foundations must start with a different suit, and likewise for the King foundations.
  3. Leave 8 empty reserve cells, each able to hold one card.

How to play

  • Only the top card of each fan is playable, and fans can't be built on—cards leave a fan only by going to a foundation or a reserve cell.
  • When a card is ready for a foundation, it moves there automatically. You can adjust this behavior in Settings if you prefer.
  • Move cards to empty reserve cells to temporarily store them for later use.
  • Cards in reserve cells can only move to the foundations, not back to the tableau.
  • Empty fans cannot be refilled with new cards.
  • Build Aces upward and Kings downward, each in the same suit.
  • The King foundations wrap around: after you build down to Ace, the next card continues back at King.

How to win

Objective: Move all 104 cards to the foundations: build Aces up to Kings in one set, and Kings down to Aces in the other, each by suit.

Win by moving all cards to the two sets of foundations. You're stuck when the reserve fills and no more foundation moves remain.

Tips

  • Use reserve cells wisely for cards that block valuable tableau options.
  • Work on both foundation stacks to open up plays.
  • Plan early in the game which high cards you'll store in reserve.
